Day Trip from Fes to the Atlas Mountains – Ifrane, Azrou & Oum Er-Rbia

- Overview of the Day Trip From Fes To Atlas Mountains
The trip from Fes will start at 8:00 AM, heading towards the Middle Atlas Mountains, passing through different Berber villages. The first stop will be in Ifrane (the Switzerland of Morocco), then we continue to the Cedar Forest of Azrou, home to the Barbary macaques. From here, we continue driving through the Atlas Mountains until we reach the stunning Oum Er-Rbia Springs, where we will visit its waterfall and explore a mysterious underground cave, from where one of the springs emerges. After enjoying a traditional Moroccan lunch, we drive back to Fes via a different scenic route—M’Rirt, Bouchbel, Amghasse, Boufakrane—to fully experience the beauty of the landscape, Berber villages, and Moroccan nature.
Ifrane – The Switzerland of Morocco
Developed by the French during the Protectorate era, Ifrane is a city known for its European architectural style, resembling an Alpine village. Due to its high altitude, Ifrane experiences snowfall in winter and a cool summer climate, making it a popular Moroccan winter destination. It is also where the lowest temperature in Africa was recorded: -23.9°C.
Azrou – Cedar Forest & Barbary Macaques
The Cèdre Gouraud Forest is located to the north of Azrou, home to one of the last sub-populations of the Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus). This forest is part of Morocco’s rich biodiversity, featuring the famous Atlas cedar trees. Azrou is also known for its European-style urban architecture, with red-tiled roofs. The area attracts hikers, nature lovers, and local tourists, making it a key ecotourism destination in Morocco.
Oum Er-Rbia Springs – A Hidden Gem in the Atlas Mountains
The Oum Er-Rbia River is Morocco’s second-largest river, stretching 600 km before reaching the Atlantic Ocean at Azemmour. The springs of Oum Er-Rbia are fed by 47 sources, with 40 fresh-water springs and 7 salty ones. We will visit a breathtaking waterfall, set against towering red cliffs, reminiscent of landscapes found in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. This contrast between harsh mountain terrain and flowing water makes the site unique. Surrounding the river and waterfalls, there is a traditional Berber village, offering visitors an authentic experience. Along the river, you can enjoy sit-on-the-floor outdoor restaurants and tea rooms, providing a relaxing atmosphere right beside the rushing waters of Oum Er-Rbia.
